The Problem

  • Many individuals depend on their morning cup of coffee for an initial energy boost, but struggle with focus and productivity once the caffeine wears off.

  • There is a lack of awareness regarding the negative effects of consuming caffeine immediately upon waking, impacting overall well-being.

  • Difficulty breaking the habit of a first-thing-in-the-morning coffee routine and lack of motivation to take actions.

The Challenge

How might we reduce the habit of consuming caffeine first thing in the morning by encouraging gradual behavior change through habit formation, helping individuals who want to improve their energy levels and build healthier daily routines?

The Solution

RiseWell is a wellness morning routine app aimed at empowering users to cultivate healthier habits, including delaying coffee intake, using modern technology.

Inspired by Nir Eyal's "Hooked Model," RiseWell incorporates triggers, actions, rewards, and investments to foster engagement and habit formation.

With features like setting personalized goals and tracking progress, RiseWell helps users achieve their wellness goals and simplifies integrating healthy practices into their daily routine.

What did I discover?

01

Waiting 90-120 minutes after waking up to drink coffee has many benefits. It lets your body naturally increase cortisol levels. This helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle and gets you ready for the day. Drinking coffee too early can mess with this natural rhythm. It might make you feel tired later. (Source: LINK)

02

As per Sleep Foundation, 2023 survey 94% of Americans drink caffeinated beverages, with 64% consuming them daily — and 56% drinking four or more 8-ounce cups in a 24-hour timespan.

03

As per Sleep Foundation, 2022 Survey 40% of coffee drinkers report consuming coffee within an hour of waking up.

04

According to a report by Statista (2023), the global mobile health (mHealth) market is expected to surge to $418.2 billion by 2025. This growth is fueled by rising demand for self-management tools aimed at enhancing health and well-being, highlighting a robust market opportunity for innovative wellness apps.

Ideation

In collaboration with my peers, we analyzed common actions in day-to-day habit-forming applications, identifying key behaviors and patterns, and synthesized our findings into an affinity map. This map visually connects all four stages of the Hooked Model, ensuring a cohesive and strategic approach to habit formation.

Hooked Model

External Triggers: Push notifications reminding users to delay their morning coffee.

Unlocks reward on completing goals-Discount coupons.

Statistics showcasing completed, upcoming and ongoing goals.

Opens the app upon receiving a notification.

Chooses any desired activity to delay coffee.

Internal Triggers: Desire to improve overall health and wellness, internal motivation to maintain a delay streak.

Storyboard

I created a storyboard that shows how users interact with the app, emphasizing the four core factors of habit formation: Trigger, Action, Reward, and Investment. Each frame of the storyboard captures one of these stages, providing a visual representation of the user’s journey, ensuring the app's design actively encourages habit formation.

Kano Cards

Kano cards help categorize features based on their impact on user satisfaction. People respond to different aspects of a product or service, experiencing varying degrees of delight, satisfaction, or frustration. The Kano Model cleverly breaks down these reactions into distinct categories: Delighters, Performance, and Basic Needs.

Scope

I created a set of 22 Kano cards capturing the app's potential features, to place on the MoSCow board. Here are the four main cards based on the app’s requirement.

User Interface

Usability Testing

To ensure RiseWell’s effectiveness to help users effectively manage their caffeine intake and prioritize well-being, I conducted usability testing.

This crucial step focused on three key objectives:

Evaluate users' first impressions of the RiseWell interface.

Assess how easily users navigate the app's overall flow.

Uncover any pain points users encounter while following typical workflows within the RiseWell app.

User Screening

Usability testing participants were recruited through a screening survey. Out of the 32 individuals who completed the screener form, 20 expressed interest in participating in the usability testing, and 5 people gave the test.

I primarily focused on selecting users based on two criteria:

People who regularly consume coffee in the morning and are interested in managing or reducing their caffeine intake.

People who are open to using apps to support their health and wellness goals.

Usability Testing - Results

Most of the tasks performed by the users were successful. Users were happy with the app's ease of use and clear interface. They liked the core concept of delaying caffeine intake and appreciated features like the activity selection and progress tracking.

Overall, usability testing provided a clear picture of user needs and frustrations. This allowed me to refine the app's functionality and navigation, leading to a more intuitive and enjoyable user experience.

Prioritizing Usability Findings

To prioritize usability issues identified during testing I utilized a Severity Matrix. It helped me determine which problems require the most immediate attention based on their impact and frequency. In this Diagram the y-axis showcases how many participants faced the issue and the x-axis showcases severity of the issue

User was expecting rewards related to the physical activity she chose.

User felt that it was a bit tricky for first time user, had to look around a bit.

User wished to be directed to the stats/ their progress after completing the daily goal

User felt that if he would have selected jogging, than this "morning playlist" would have been beneficial

User felt that if he would have selected jogging, than this "morning playlist" would have been beneficial

User pointed out that there was no option to continue with google/ facebook

User asked to mention what's today on the calendar as well.

User asked to highlight what's today’s activity in the TODAY section of stats page

User gave some examples of rewards by saying " a promo code for a uber restaurant, or some healthy groceries"

User said that they felt like playlist wasn't reward worthy.

Redesign

01

After

To address this, I replaced it with coffee coupons, a more tangible reward that aligns with user expectations. This switch directly responds to user feedback, boosting motivation and overall satisfaction within the app.

Before

Users found the morning playlist reward underwhelming and lacking motivation.

02

Added alternative login options like Google and Facebook to the onboarding process. This lets users sign in with familiar credentials, skipping the extra step of creating a new account and password. It streamlines onboarding, making the app more accessible and inviting.

Before

After

03

Users struggled to understand the current day's activity in the stats section, causing confusion and frustration. To resolve this, I added a new "Today's Activity" section. This dedicated space helps users easily track their daily progress, improving their experience and motivation within the app.

After

Before

04

Users struggled to move forward in the app as they couldn’t find the "Get Started" button buried at the bottom of the page. To fix this, I moved the button to the top of the page for immediate visibility, making it easier for users to jump into the app.

Before

After

05

Before

After

Users struggled to identify the current date on the calendar page due to a lack of clear indication.

To address this, I implemented a clear visual cue highlighting today's date.

Additionally, I revamped the calendar's overall appearance, enhancing its visual appeal and making it more intuitive to navigate.

Key Takeaways and Learnings

  • Incorporating elements of the Hooked Model helped me understand how to design habit-forming experiences. By making the onboarding process engaging (the Trigger), helping users manage their caffeine intake (the Action), and giving rewards for their progress (the Reward), I saw how an app can keep users motivated and engaged over time.

  • Conducting user testing throughout the development process was an eye-opening experience. Observing user interactions and challenges highlighted the importance of empathy-driven design. By focusing on what users need and what issues they encounter, I learned how to improve the app's features and make the interface easier to use.

  • Focusing on a smooth and helpful onboarding process showed me how important personalization is. By offering alternative login options and clear progress tracking, I learned how to remove unnecessary barriers and encourage user engagement from the very beginning. This experience will help me create user-friendly introductions for future apps, making sure users have a great first impression and keep coming back.

  • My experience doesn't stop at the Hook Model. Analyzing user data and progress through the app's metrics provided valuable insights into user behavior and identified areas for further improvement. Combining this data-driven approach with what I learned from user testing helped me balance meeting user needs and using data to personalize their journey for the best engagement.
